Older People in Renfrewshire can be supported through our digital day service, or where necessary within one of our day centres
Digital Day Service
Renfrewshire HSCP has modernised day services provision for Older People within Renfrewshire, with the introduction of digital day services. Developed during the covid-19 pandemic, the knowledge and experience gained from providing this service evidenced a number of needs that could be met by this service model. There are now remote supports available through the use of technology, where clients are able to benefit from the social stimulation and learning from the comfort of their own homes, by accessing our digital service groups.
It is recognised that high-quality social connections are essential to our mental and physical health and our well-being. The digital day service aims to alleviate social isolation and loneliness among older people by offering a high-quality digital service to help improve their health and wellbeing. Digital day services include tutorials in use of the Internet, support for video (Microsoft Teams) communication, messaging services, and discussion groups. This leads to the development of peer support and increased digital contact with family and friends. Feedback from digital service participants indicates a reduction in feelings of isolation and loneliness, consequently improving their health and wellbeing.
Day Centres
Day service participants who need to be supported in a building based service may be supported at one of our three centres in Renfrewshire. The centres each have level access and are fully adapted for wheelchairs users and those with reduced mobility.
Participants can make their own way to the centre, or transport can be provided.
Our day services help people remain active, meet with others and give carers some time to focus on their own needs.
One of the people who goes to the day centre described their day:
"I get help from the care at home service to get washed, and my clothes on before the bus arrivesI sit at my window and keep an eye for the bus coming into my streetI wave when I see the girl coming up the path to collect meI need some help to make sure I've locked my house and the girl helps me down the path and onto the busI get to catch up with my friends on the bus as we stop to pick up one of the men who comes to centreHe needs some help with his walking frame, but the girl is always very patient with himI usually get a blether with the driver when we're waitingSometimes we have a sing song on the bus, depending on how everyone is feelingWe arrive at the centre and the staff are waiting to get us all off the busI get my jacket hung up and settled down with some of the ladies who arrived before meWe get a cup of tea and some toast, and a blether with the staff as they get things all organised for usI enjoy the arts and crafts we do in the morning, especially when we make things for the celebrationsBefore I know it, we're at the table and lunch is being servedWe get two courses and there's always a choice of what we're having to eatA couple of the ladies need a wee hand from the staff with their lunch but there's no rush for any of usI usually need some help to get to the toilet and the staff are always helpful and don't make me feel uncomfortableIn the afternoon, we do a quiz or have a talk about what's going on in the worldSometimes there's a singer who comes to entertain us, but if not we have a sing song ourselvesThen its time for another cup of tea and a slice of cake or some nice fresh fruitOnce we're fed and watered, its time to get ready for going on the bus againWe all get helped onto the bus and we drop off the man with his walking frame firstI'm next to get off the bus and I say my goodbyes to the other ladies until the next day at the centreAgain the girl helps me to get up the path and into the house and settledI sit and watch my telly until the carer comes in, but I usually fall asleep after my busy dayIt's a great day out and I love getting a bit of exercise and blethering to everyoneThe day centre helps me stay at home and not feel so lonely which makes me feel better overall"
The aim of providing support at our day centres is to sustain people living in their own homes as independently as possible, while encouraging social stimulation and preventing isolation through meaningful activities.
