Renfrewshire welcomes National Adult Protection Day 2021.
Thirteen years after implementation of the Adult Support and Protection Act in Scotland, local partners involved in identifying and safeguarding adults at risk of harm in Renfrewshire have issued a statement about the progress made.
Carron O'Byrne (Head of Health and Social Care - Paisley - Renfrewshire Health & Social Care Partnership) said:
"Last year there were over 3,100 adult protection or welfare concern referrals made in Renfrewshire. These have included referrals about a range of issues, including adults at risk of being sexually, financially and physically abused; as well as referrals for adults at risk of neglect or self-harm. Health and social care services are fully committed to safeguarding adults at risk of harm in Renfrewshire. I would therefore encourage everyone to get in touch if they are worried that a more vulnerable adult might be at risk of harm. Just as with the protection of children, we recognise that protecting adults is a shared responsibility and it is important people get in touch if they have concerns."
Superintendent Rhona Fraser from Police Scotland said:
"The inter-agency work in Renfrewshire between the Health and Social Care Partnership; the NHS; Police Scotland; Scottish Fire and Rescue; and our independent and voluntary partners has seen many successes. We are working together more closely than ever to safeguard victims of sexual and physical abuse, and to identify subtle signs of harm so that we can help keep people safe within and outside of their homes. Great strides have been made in developing partnerships between the Community Safety Partnership; local businesses; colleagues in health and social work; and Police Scotland leading to the prevention of scams and other forms of financial harm. We urge members of the public to remain vigilant to possible signs of harm to adults and to report concerns, so that we can take steps to protect all of Renfrewshire's residents."
John Paterson (Independent Chair of the Renfrewshire Adult Protection Committee) said:
"We are proud of the work that has been done across Renfrewshire but we realise that there is always more that can be done. To a significant extent we rely on members of the public coming forward to alert us to concerns. In Renfrewshire we recognise that adult protection is everyone's business - this includes the friends, family, neighbours, businesses, and fellow residents who come into contact with adults who may be at risk of harm. Harm can be many things, including neglect by a carer or care provider; self-neglect; physical, sexual, psychological or financial abuse; or self-harm. We want you to let us know if you have any concerns about someone you know. A single e-mail or phone call can trigger sensitive inquiries to be made and protective measures taken. We strive to use our collective endeavours to protect adults at risk of harm in Renfrewshire."
